Say HELLO to Sarah and Darren of SD Photography

Howdy, we’re Sarah and Darren! It takes no stretch of the imagination to understand why we are called SD Photography – it was just easier that way! Movie geeks, music freaks, vintage floozies, great big foodies and massive animal lovers with a cup of tea or five thrown in the mix and a cherry on top…that’s us. We also LOVE to take photos and weddings make us smile lots!

I have a few random placed tattoos (mostly skulls & stars – you could say I was a bit obsessed!) and currently working on getting my full sleeve done and dusted (finally!) – the design is going to incorporate my huge love of animals and our bunnies will have centre stage (did I mention we have 4?), amongst some weird and wonderful things.

Now, Darren on the other hand, is a complete blank canvas and currently has no ink to show yet! He has been planning his designs for many moons, but just doesn’t have the balls to action these ink dreams of his. (Rather harsh, soz Darren!)

Our style of shooting is creative, fun and a little bit quirky!

We love to make all of our couples we photograph, feel completely at ease, so at some point or another, you will probably hear the worst joke of your life and laugh anyway, because we look like a pair of pillocks!

As well as shooting weddings in good ol’ blighty, we are rather partial to a destination wedding or two! So far we have captured couples tying the knot in Italy, Finland, Germany, Spain & Cyprus, with many more to come this year and next, in the likes of Malta, Sweden and Santorini.

“I cannot even count how many times I have watched ‘Cry Baby’ as a teenager.” explains shoot creator Lau Delpech of French Made, “What attracted me the most were its rebellious characters who managed to break their subculture taboos. On this 50’s inspired styled photo shoot, I wanted to recreate that spirit by not only including moody type tattooed models but also an unconventional bridal colour scheme.”

It’s now such an honour to present to you how this cast turned my vision into these bright, eye pleasing creations, brilliantly captured by Kat Forsyth Photography and Piece Of Cake Films at the iconic Ace Café in North London.

Kat’s photography is always fresh, bright and fun, which was exactly the look we needed for this brightly-coloured shoot. She captured the vibe and style of the 50s rockabilly era in her own unique style, keeping it vintage but still with a modern-day twist to inspire today’s brides!

Laura and Leigh didn’t produce JUST a behind-the-scenes type work but they went for something better- a short film in its own right. They even shot some of the footage on Super 8mm which brings some authentic vintage style to the piece and ties in well with the 50s theme. What an edgy, creative little masterpiece! See for yourself!

I thought four models would give us a greater opportunity to showcase different options. Natasha from Pretty Me Vintage styled Katt, one of our bridesmaids, according to Wanda with a Bettie Page style short fringe and cute yet fierce curls. For Gwenda, she used victory rolls. Rachie our Bride, was given THE ultimate classic 50′s hairdo with Kelly Spence’s perfectly suited short puff veil.

As for make-up, Natasha beautifully recreated the 1950’s look with fabulous fake eyelashes, juicy red lips, black eyeliner and enhanced eyebrows. Our quiff hair groom, Chris was lucky enough to wear two outfits, first a Hollywood style suit from Morellos which was very popular for wedding at that time and then, the Cry Baby look jeans, white t-shirt and leather jacket.

The girls all had glamorous Oh My Honey dresses on. Yes, every rockabilly chick’s dream dress! Oh My Honey usually specialises in full circle skirts but in order to be more faithful to the Cry Baby crew, Louise made two fitted dresses especially for the shoot.

Not only did Gwenda volunteer to model, as she couldn’t resist the chance to wear one of Louise’s freshly designed beauties, but she also created stunning bouquets. The key colours of red, yellow and black guided her flower choices so she selected classic Rockabilly roses and a few cheeky sunflowers. We also displayed two alternative bouquets.

Emma, from Beaubuttons wanted to create a bold bouquet to reflect the style of the shoot with pillar box red polka dot buttons combined with distinctive red floral buttons. For the felt one, she opted for a more kitsch vibe with a heart shape and bubble gum pink incorporated with the red and white.

Some flowers and cute stationery were used to accent French Made cakes, some rose petals as table confetti and some other flowers scattered around the nicely arranged cupcake tower. For my sweet creations, I used a selection of toppers including candies in the shape of cherries and strawberry to match one of the wonderful Pearls and Swine fascinators that can be seen on both the model’s heads and on the top tier of the wedding cake, that our Cry baby and Allison cut to mark the beginning of their new life as newly-weds.

Catherine from Vintage Loves Roses designed some amazing stationery that combined both a reflection of the film’s rock n roll element and the style of the venue. By using the black and white chequered design from Ace Cafe‘s walls, she successfully gave her work the biker edge that Cry Baby oozes in the film. The rose and flames featured on the cake toppers for example were inspired by ‘Jukebox Jamboree’. Music was undoubtedly a big part of the lovers’ romance so songs from the film were cleverly included on the table plan

If you haven’t already seen it, then you’re going to be ridiculously excited! Pinterest is just a online scrapbook or notice/pinboard and it’s SO GOOD!

This is what my Pinterest looks like. It’s full of the stuff I love such as owls, cakes, home decor and most importantly, tattooed weddings.

With Pinterest, it’s SO easy to add stuff to your boards when you’re out and about with the app, or if you’re at your desk or laptop, you can easily add the “Pin It” button to your Bookmarks.

“In September last year I collaborated with some super cool industry friends to shoot this bridal shoot. I didn’t just want it to be about the brides but about Him & Her!”

I wanted to portray the build up to the ceremony, the magical moment of going from you to a BRIDE or a GROOM! It’s one of my favourites parts of a wedding to photograph. The biggest thing I wanted to do was to show how cool our local suppliers really are. 

We were spoilt for choice for stunning rooms to shoot in, which was a good job considering the weather!

“My aim is to create wedding stationery for quirky couples who are having an off-beat, alternative or vintage style wedding day.”

I am in love with stationery at the moment. I may have spent a small fortune on a new diary, notepads and pens covered in owls..

I just love how unique Sharon’s wedding stationery is.. I’ll let her introduce herself..

After I designed and made the invites and on the day stationery for my own wedding last year, I realised that organising my own wedding was a real opportunity for me and my husband-to-be to get creative and express ourselves.

I’m a little bit obsessed with weddings and massively obsessed with good design, illustration and typography so it made sense that I put that together to create Satin and Tat. 

I want my designs to stand out from other wedding stationery so that my brides and grooms can be confident that they’re going to have something totally unique.  I combine hand drawn illustrations and mix media design with good quality recycled card stock and produce everything from my little home office.

I look everywhere for inspiration. My favourite skull design invite is inspired by Damien Hirst and Alexander Mcqueen. By day I’m a freelance photographer so I take a lot of ideas from photography and use my own photographs in my stationery design. I’m inspired a lot by fashion, tattoo art, album covers and alternative culture. At the moment I’m obsessed by apothecary and ‘cabinets of curiosities’ which have inspired some of my more vintage style designs.

I’d like to think that my work features a pretty dynamic mix of designs that would appeal to the inked bride and groom whatever their style. I am, however, gagging to create a custom stationery design based on a bride or grooms tattoos. A bespoke stationery design is the best way to capture a bride and grooms individual style and make their wedding day even more personal.

Seriously, I have younger siblings that I “take to the cinema” whenever there’s a new release. My favourite and slightly newer Disney feature is Tangled. Seriously – Who knew a horse could BE SO FUNNY?!!

Today, Simply Bridal share traditions and other ways to which you can honour the women in your family at your wedding. 

What great ideas from Simply Bridal again this week! How will you be getting the women involved in you wedding?

We decided that we wanted to get married in February last year, but weren’t sure of the date.  I was listening to the radio one day and heard it would have been Johnny Cash and June Carter’s wedding anniversary- March 1^st.  We are both huge music  fans, especially of Johnny Cash and thought it would a lot of fun and hopefully some luck to share the same day with a couple who have such an amazing love story.

“We kept it cool and casual on the big day with our Converse!”

I had so many ideas but with this being a destination wedding and so small (13 people including ourselves) I couldn’t pack very much.  The best piece was my daughter’s flower girl sign that I decorated.

“I wear my tattoos proudly and wanted a dress that was able to incorporate them well.  I wore a sleeveless deep v-neck dress that fit my chest piece just right!”

I got sick the DAY of the wedding and felt awful the whole day (and weekend to follow)!  I later found out I had strep throat.  I feel like the day was a blur… and spent most of it in bed.  The highlight was definitely saying our vows for me.  For those 15 mins I felt invincible.
