Boo Boo Kitty Couture: Dresses & Other Pretty Things

Good morning! Today’s post is all about the lovely Aislinn of Boo Boo Kitty Couture who never ceases to amaze me with her new products, my current favourite being the  pretty hair bows!

“Hi, I am Aislinn.
I run a Nottingham based made to measure, vintage inspired dress making company, BooBoo Kitty Couture (www.boobookittycouture.coom) I make vintage inspired wedding dresses, burlesque costumes, hair accessories, evening and day wear.

I make dresses for women (and men) of all shapes and sizes, those who dabble in alternative style, full time rockers, vintage pin up queens, cutie pie kiddies, rock and roll stars and burlesque startlets.

“My mother was a seamstress and I remember staying up late helping her pin patterns and cut out garments. I’d stay up watching her sew until the early hours of the morning, watching her incredible attention to detail. She’s such an incredible inspiration to me.

I graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2006 with a degree in Textile Design. During my time at university I studied weaving, printing, embroidery and knitting. I specialised in woven textiles for fashion; it encouraged my love of texture and colour, and it’s always so difficult to choose fabrics, even now!

“After graduating, my career got side-tracked from the fashion industry to interior design and I made the leap to leave Nottingham for the bright lights of London. I’ve worked in numerous high-end interior design companies but despite how successfully my career was steering in the interiors industry, I really missed fashion.

I got a part time job in the vintage boutique, The Girl Can’t Help It, located in London’s best indoor antiques centre, Alfie’s Antiques Market. I learnt a great deal about vintage fashion and styling from working there and I loved how all the garments were hand-picked from America and shipped across the pond.

“I am heavily inspired by watching old movies. I always have an old Marilyn Monroe film on while I work. I am a massive fan of Mad Men, I love Betty Drapers perfect house wife look, her full skirts and pretty dresses.

On your wedding day – go with what eve you feel comfortable in. Don’t feel you have to cover your tattoos just to please others, its your day, do it your way. I have found lace very popular this year, lace bodices with a full fifties style skirt. I have found the fifties look flatters most body shapes.

Below is a photo of me and one of the brides I have made a dress for.  She didn’t want to cover her chest piece tattoo, but she didn’t want her wedding to be all about the tattoo.  So she went for a lace bodice, so the tattoo could still be seen but wasn’t full on.

“I have two full sleeves, a back piece, star on finger and a swear word on the inside of my lip! One of my sleeves was by Valerie Vargas in Frith Street London. Its sewing, tea and pin up inspired. I waited on her waiting list for over a year to get it started and took nearly a year to complete, but I was well worth the wait!

I used to have lots of piercings and 16mm stretched ears, but I have taken them all out. My ears have slightly closed up but I cant wear normal earrings yet. I like to wear clip on vintage earrings instead. I took out my piercings for no particular reason, after having them for over ten years I was a bit bored of them. I wanted to concentrate more on getting more tattoos!”

Aislinn has also recently created a beautiful custom piece for Anna Fur Laxis (see image below!) You can read all about it here on the Boo Boo Kitty Couture blog – make sure you do it’s amazing! Do leave Aislinn some love and be sure to purchase lots of pretty things here!
