Red Gets Wed III – Guest Post [Tattooed Bride Blog]

Here it is! Another wonderful edition to Red Gets Wed! (Here for Part I and Part II)

Red has been a gorgeous edition to Marry Me Ink this first year, it’s been great having her whilst the blog grows and gains glorious readers. Seriously, I cannot wait for her wedding this year. I’m counting down the weeks and days with her!

“If tattoos are the body’s way of flowering, then I’m officially in bloom! You may remember back in February I filled you in on my most recent quest for inkiness, in the form of a glorious wedding-inspired design dedicated to my betrothed…

Wellllll *cue awesome drum roll, Travis Barker stylee*….BEHOLD, my marvellous magnum opus….

Pretty magnificent, isn’t it? Kev at Lucky Cat Tattoo Parlour did a stellar job during my second stint in the chair to finish off this bad boy. And, despite my pain-induced ramblings (I whittered a serious amount of sh*te that day…) I even got a free half hour thrown in by the kind Captain just to get the job done to perfection.

His mission? To try and incorporate as best as possible an existing tattoo from my teenage years – the ten (slightly pointless, but I was going through a phase) pink and black stars in the middle – and to add some ‘pretty colour’. Yep, that’s all he got from me, and he STILL managed to produce a tattoo that went so far beyond my expectations, I’m still a little in shock.

Because great tattoos just don’t happen to me. I had six mediocre etchings before I found my tattopia in Lucky Cat, and it got me thinking – if I knew then, what I know now, would I have had them done differently? I don’t ‘regret’ any one of my tattoos as they are all the most personal souvenirs from certain times in my slightly kooky life, but as I mature (ahem) it’s easier to reflect on better ways to approach adding to my ever-growing collection.

Soooo, I’ve come up with my top 10 tat tips (can you tell I have a thing for alliteration?) which will be my personal reminder for future, and hopefully help you over that fence if you’re still on it….

  1. Research! Whittle away hours online, blissfully devouring everything the world wide web has to offer. My favourite free sites include The Tattoo Page, my latest obsession, Pinterest, Marry Me Ink (of course!) and Rock n Roll Bride, which regularly features gorgeously inked brides that never fail to inspire me.
  2. Try not to get too carried away with a fleeting trend. Just because you totally and utterly adore that new emo band now, and they have such a cool logo, doesn’t mean you’ll still love em’ in a decade. Think very, very carefully about your choice of design, and whether you truly want that image/those words to always be a part of your life. Forever’s a long time after all!
  3. In addition to talent, pick a tattoo parlour that values the three C’s – cleanliness, creativity and customer care. Basic stuff, but super important in practice.
  4. Book a consultation. It may cost, but ask yourself what you value more – £10 today or a lifetime of regret everytime you look in the mirror? (deep, but true)
  5. It’s often tricky, as the client, to articulate the masterpiece you’ve concocted in your head. If you, like me, possess the drawing skills of Edward Scissorhands, then you need to bring your ideas to life with visual aids – print-outs from t’internet, pictures from magazines, a collage, instagram photos, calligraphy/fonts you like. It’s worth taking the time to build up your collection before your consultation, and it’ll serve a double purpose to reinforce exactly what you’re looking for. My own tatspiration Pinterest Board always helps focus my mind onto what it is I really want in a tattoo.
  6. For the same reason as above make sure you feel 100% comfortable with, and trust, the tattoo artist you choose. You don’t want to put your precious skin in the hands of someone you’re unsure of, and you really don’t want to be spending hours on end with a complete bell-end!
  7. If you’re going for a larger piece and don’t have wads of cash to splash make the process work for you by booking appointments around pay day. This was a god-send when I got mine.
  8. Make sure you aren’t jetting off anywhere exotic for at least a month after getting your tat finished. To preserve your little piece of art in all its glory it’s always safer to keep it out of direct sunshine for fade-avoidance.
  9. I’m no expert in after-care as a self-confessed lazy lump (sometimes I only brush my teeth once a day because I just can’t be bothered) but my very decorated friend Caz swears by a three day ritual of washing with warm water, gently drying, applying bepanthan cream and covering in cling film, repeating three times a day (her tattoos sure do look gorgeous even after years of having them!).
  10. Add to your wardrobe with a few key pieces that flash your tat in all its glory, and enjoy! :)”
WOWW! Thanks Red for your handy tips!
Isn’t she the best?
Go on.. Leave her some love!

Jessica Gahring Gets Me Going [An Interview With Tattooist And Pin Up Sensation Ms Retro Dixie]

I am SO excited to share this with you today!! I for one, love this lady’s work – in print and on skin!

It all started a couple of months ago when I read “Msretrodixie is now following you”.
To say that I was excited would only be a fraction to explain the amount of squealing I was doing! It’s true – I’m a sucker for Pin Up!

After a cheeky email, Ms Retro Dixie agreed to an interview for all you gals (and guys) with lashings of ink and who love Pin Up as much as myself!

So here she is, Ms Jessica Gahring!

My name is Jessica Lynn Gahring and I make 1950s ankle rocks ruffle, hehe. I make myself laugh sometimes.
I am actually a tattoo artist by day and a Pin Up model in my free time. I was last seen on TLC’s hit reality series, NY INK, where my drive for the art of tattooing was displayed through 2 entire seasons. I am currently tattooing full-time in the Albany, NY area and couldn’t be happier.

Outside of my profession, I am a very dedicated Mommy and put my family above all else. My daughter is 7 and is just as spunky and feisty as myself. I have an extensive background in Education and like to leave that knowledge sitting in the back of my mind for when I need it.

What was your first tattoo? How many do you have in total?
My first tattoo was a butterfly in between my shoulder blades that I got at the age of 18. I took my best friend and Mom with me on this devirgining experience but my friend was the only other person that walked out with a new tattoo, hehe.
I have actually covered my first 3 tattoos with art that is significantly better and more consistent with my style.

What’s your favourite drink?
My favorite drink, hands down, is water. I don’t drink soda often and when I do it is ALWAYS a Coca~Cola! When it comes to alcohol, I love wine, Pabst Blue Ribbon and any sort of Whiskey or Vodka. Mmmmm… vodka!

What were your reasons for getting into pin up art and becoming Ms Retro Dixie? Who are your idols? (if any)
I was actually drawn to the era of the 1950s and what family meant back then way before I was drawn to the actual art of Pin Up styling.
I have a BA in Sociology and a large part of my studies was geared toward the Sociology of the Family. I loved that in that era married couples would trudge through issues for the sake of family. I feel that there are way too many people getting divorced these days over small issues.
As my research continued I found myself drawn to the women who stayed at home and were essentially the building blocks of entire family units. The Pin Up was that extension to the Military Man.

(Sneak peek of my Celeste Giuliano photography shoot!)

I love doing photos for my Man now, knowing that it will make him happy and hold him over for the next time that he sees me.
There is something so sultry, sexy and strong about a Pin Up woman (and definitely confidence!) that how could someone NOT love Pin Up Art?!

As far as my name, Ms. Retro Dixie, goes… “Retro” is a term to mean a new version of something older (made today that is like yesterday… I’m a modern Pin Up of that era) and “Dixie” refers to my country upbringing. I grew up riding 4-wheelers, playing in the mud, hunting with my dad, etc. I love the country artists of the old days, as well: Johnny Cash, Whalon Jennings, etc.

What style of illustrations are your favourite to tattoo?
The majority of my tattoo work revolves around black & grey photorealism OR traditional tattoo images (bold outlines, simple coloring, 2D images).

I started as a black & grey artist and I feel that because of my Pin Up nature, I started getting a following of military men (and women) who were drawn to traditional style tattoos and coloring.
I got into traditional tattoos out of client desire and actually love doing that style now, as well.

More traditional requests, yayy! (I didn’t do the random tribal)

When you’re not busy tattooing or modeling, what’s your favourite thing to do?
If I am not busy tattooing or modeling, you will find me spending non-stop time with both my friends and family OR in thinking up my next big idea. I enjoy splitting my professional and private life, as I prefer to give my daughter and man nonstop attention when I’m with them. I believe very much in family and couldn’t be where I am currently without their love and support.

What can’t you live without?
I feel like this goes without saying: FAMILY!

Do you have any favourite cosmetics and accessories?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my false eyelashes! My eyes are so bright blue that when I accent my eyes with those lashes my eyes just pop right out. I don’t mean to brag, but they’re slightly enticing (one of the reasons I love hiding them with my glasses, hehe).

I mean, I love make up in general so give me a lipstick and I’ll be happier than a pig in shit! Ha.

How are you enjoying being the manager at NY Ink?
I have actually left this position and pursued my tattooing full-time. I figured that it was better to leave the management up to an individual who was 100% content being a manager.
I have done Management many times in my past and was ready to branch out, follow my passions and leave that to others.
The only time you will find me in that capacity again is when I open my own tattoo studio… But I’ll be able to balance that with my tattoo appointments so I’ll be a happy lil’ diva then!

Do you have dress down days or do you continue the look at home?
For the most part, I continue the look at home. It is often difficult to do in NY winters so jeans are often a must.

However, I always have on some sort of vintage flare and there is no question that I have that look or hints of it at all times.

(Msretrodixie IG: instagr.am/p/IMYGDYJDev/)

Do you have any funny quirks?
I think that I am nothing but a big funny quirk, hehe. I like to play the girl card a lot, even though I am a pretty tough badass bitch.

I giggle a lot and I can burp like nobodies business (sorry boys, hehe). Other than that, I’m your regular “Girl Next Door”.

Do you have any words of wisdom for the decorated lady and Pin Up aspirer?
EMBRACE YOUR CURVES JUST AS YOU WERE MADE!

Make all clothing and styling decisions based on how you want yourself to be viewed.
NEVER give in to the desires of others unless those desires are in line with your own.

(Photo by East Coast Pinups. Stlying by My Fancy Fetish.
A little humor while on our shoot in Atlantic Highlands, NJ)

Find the era that you are most drawn to and find local vintage stores and antique auctions to really live out your passions.
My Pin Up love extends beyond just clothing and into my home decorations, the appliances that I have in my home & my decor. Basically, if I could have been born in another era it would definitely be the era of the Kirby Vacuum discovery!

Isn’t Jessica just WONDERFUL!

Seriously, I am so amazed by her confidence and astounding advice for aspiring Pin Ups (It’s given myself a kick and some helpful tips which I get to put to use very soon!)

You can find Jessica here and also on her Facebook page.

Please share this post. Not only is Jessica an amazing tattoo artist, but is also multiple bucketfuls of inspiration!

Lots of love!

Honeymoon Tattoos – Laura & Tom

Good afternoon! I hope you’ve had a splendid weekend? I certainly did at the Wedding Carnival, but that’s for another day!
Today I have a fabulous pair of honeymoon tattoos on such a wonderful couple!
You may notice Laura as Mrs Lou Pops or even the Bonfire Night Bride. Yep – They were married on bonfire night! How awesome?!! You can read more about the wedding over on Bonfire Night Bride, but I’m going to hand straight over to Laura now to talk about the tattoos she & Tom got whilst on their honeymoon!
Enjoy!
“Tom and I were married on November 5th 2011 at the stunning Danby Castle in North Yorkshire and we honeymooned on the Queen Mary 2 spending a week in luxury, crossing the Atlantic from Southampton to New York. We then spent five days in New York living it up at the Soho Grand and two days in Boston at the Nine Zero hotel on Boston Common. My husband and I are both BIG tattoo fans, mainly brightly coloured traditional style but we appreciate all good work. Saying that, I do also have some pretty crap tattoos too but we all make mistakes! We went travelling in 2009 and both had tattoos in San Francisco as a reminder of our amazing time away so we decided that from then on, any big holiday we have we’ll get a new tattoo and what trip away is bigger than your honeymoon?!
We both adore the work of Valerie Vargas, based at London’s Frith Street Tattoos and so we used the links on her website to find an NYC based artist. If she’s a fan then that artist is good enough for us! We soon came across Sarah Schor at King’s Avenue Tattoo, a shop owned by the mind blowing Mike Rubendall, and we didn’t look any further. Her style is exactly what we love. We emailed the shop and they really couldn’t have been any friendlier and more helpful. We carried out all of our consultations via email and when the time came for our appointments what Sarah had drawn up for us was perfect!

We both wanted something to resemble our wedding day so as it was a Bonfire Night wedding we both went for the phrase “remember remember” as a nod towards the 5th November. The book and inkpot on my tattoo resemble the wedding register. I wanted something brightly coloured somewhere only my husband would see it and as I have nice hefty legs, my right thigh was the perfect canvas for it!

Tom had a Statue of Liberty with blue eyes as my ‘baby blues’ as he calls them, are his favourite part of me!”

Aren’t they amazing tattoos? Leave Laura & Tom some love and be sure to swing by the Bonfire Night Bride site and read Laura’s updates! They’re fabulous!

Red Gets Wed II – Guest Post [Tattoo Bride Blog]

Eeeek! I’ve been wanting to share Part Deux with you for ages!!
Even before I was sent the text to support her tattoo.. I wanted to share the start to Red’s tattoo as soon as she sneak peeked me an image!

So on this wonderful Thursday afternoon, I’m going to hand you straight over to the lady herself.. Here the tale continues..

Every tat has a tale to tell. Skin can double-up as a birth or death register, provide storage space for a special memory or offer a canvas for that grand gesture. My latest addition definitely falls into the latter, but instead of wearing my heart on my sleeve it’s well and truly etched across my back! As you may remember from my very first guest post on Marry Me Ink last December, I was the girl blethering about my plans to physically narrate a very special time in my life with a wedding tattoo! So, the marvellous Rachael kindly invited me back to spill the ink on my latest session with the needle…

After three months of eager anticipation (and frantic saving) my three hour appointment in the chair with Captain Kev Younger of Lucky Cat Tattoo Parlour happened one drizzly Saturday afternoon in February. Stepping foot into the decadent parlour was like hitching a lift with Bill and Ted in their excellent phone booth, landing somewhere between the renaissance and early twentieth century Japan, all with a touch of Parisian opulence thrown in for good measure! Confused? Let’s just say the decor was more than a little impressive. Greeted by a collection of Maneki Neko’s (or ‘Lucky Cats’) beckoning me with their friendly little paws as I entered the grand reception area, the adrenaline and excitement really kicked in, stimulated further by the luxurious red colour adorning the walls.

After the necessary form-filling was finished and en route to where the magic happened I rubbed the big-bellied Buddha at the door for luck and wished with every bone in my body that this wouldn’t be sorer than any other time I’d been drawn on.

I’d only seen parts of my design over email so wasn’t really sure how my ideas had transpired on paper, but straight away Kev suggested he transfer them onto my skin to see how the pieces would fit together. Half an hour later and the result literally took my breath away! Not only did I love it, but he’d somehow managed to take my confused and rambling explanation of what I wanted (which went something like this: “errrmmmm, I’d like it to be feminine, and have lace and birds, and be feminine…and, errrmmmm….”) and design something more perfect than I ever thought was possible from my garbled imagination.

Not to be overly sycophantic here, but Kev epitomises the definition of ‘cool’. His eclectically dapper exterior lets you know he takes what he does very seriously, but it’s certainly not a case of style over substance. An old school gentleman at the core, he was once described in a newspaper article on tattoos as ‘quiet and intense’…mesmerizingly mellow, I’d go as far to say. His gentle voice and calming eyes makes you feel that you’re in a safe place as his customer – something that’s so important when putting your precious skin in hands holding a very scary needle!

And knowing his hands house the actual digits that tattoo Scotland’s most talented (and hottest) music export, Simon Neil, was almost too much for this humungous Biffy fan to handle (*swoon*)! Which better fine line artist to etch my favourite lyrics (“Nothing lasts forever, except you and me” Mountains, by Biffy Clyro) onto my back? I just about managed to contain myself. Well, except the part where I nearly weed at seeing Simon’s signature sprawled on the wall after his last visit only a fortnight previous…

Being the world’s biggest wuss, I brought along my lovely friend Caz to distract me from the buzz and the burn, and she more than lived up to her duties. Two and a half hours, a lot of random banter (and delirious chatterings in my pained state), and a fairly numb arse later, I had the bulk of the prettiest tattoo I ever did see, done!

Was it sore? F*ck yes! But was it worth it? F*CK YES! I’ve got another two hour sesh booked in for the beginning of April (he’s a man in demand) and I can’t bloody wait to get this bad boy shaded.

The beauty below is my attempt at signifying the immeasurable and all-consuming love I have for the remarkable man I plan to marry in six months time.

In our eight years together he’s already done more than most in the better and worse, richer (less of this bit) and poorer, sickness and health, times. No amount of ink could show him how insanely thankful I am to be in his life.

Love you to Jupiter and back beb.

So, what’s the story behind your own little piece of uniqueness, I’m literally itching (well, my back is!) to know? 🙂
